Aerodynamic Optimization of Façade Protrusions in Urban Street Canyons

Image
Urban street canyons significantly influence local airflow, thermal comfort, and pollutant dispersion. Architectural façades, especially those featuring ribs or horizontal protrusions, play a crucial role in modifying these aerodynamic behaviors. Recent studies highlight that geometric parameters of façade elements—such as rib spacing and depth—can alter vortex structures and flow regimes within urban canyons. However, systematic investigations focusing on how these parameters affect turbulence and ventilation efficiency remain limited. This study uses large-eddy simulations (LES) to explore the aerodynamic response of street canyons to varying façade rib geometries, advancing the understanding of wind–structure interactions in dense urban settings. Influence of Façade Geometry on Urban Aerodynamics The geometric configuration of façades significantly determines airflow distribution and turbulence intensity around buildings. By analyzing variations in the ratio of rib separation di...

Psychological Influence of Architectural Geometry on User Perception and Emotional Response

Image
Architecture merges science, art, technology, and psychology to shape environments that influence human comfort and emotional well-being. The study investigates how building forms—particularly curved and angular geometries—affect users’ psychological responses and spatial preferences. By examining perception, emotional engagement, and context-based appeal, the research seeks to understand how architectural form can enhance user experience and inform evidence-based design strategies. Theoretical Foundation: Environmental Psychology and Form Perception Environmental psychology provides insights into how individuals emotionally and cognitively respond to spatial environments. Curved architectural forms often evoke feelings of comfort, softness, and safety, while angular designs may convey strength, modernity, or tension. Understanding these psychological associations helps architects design spaces that align with intended emotional outcomes and social purposes. Curved Geometry and ...

Effects of Nozzle Design on 3D-Printed UHP-SHCC: Mechanical Performance and Microstructural Insights

Image
The design of extrusion nozzles in 3D concrete printing plays a crucial role in determining the printability and mechanical properties of cementitious composites. Recent industrial and scientific advancements have focused on optimizing nozzle geometry to enhance filament deposition, reduce clogging, and improve overall structural performance. This study investigates rectangular nozzles ranging from 3 mm to 10 mm in thickness and examines their influence on the mechanical behavior of Ultra-High Performance Strain-Hardening Cementitious Composites (UHP-SHCC). Understanding the relationship between nozzle design, fiber alignment, and mechanical performance is critical for advancing 3D concrete printing technology. Extrudability and Filament Formation Extrudability is a primary factor in 3D printing performance, and nozzle thickness directly impacts the ease with which UHP-SHCC filaments are deposited. As nozzle thickness decreases, the risk of clogging increases, particularly when fiber c...
