Uncovering the Hidden Heritage: Architectural Beauty and Typology of Ancient Syriac Churches in Rural Mardin
The rural regions of Mardin in southeastern Turkey contain a rich architectural heritage shaped by centuries of Syriac Orthodox presence. This study examines the architectural features, typological diversity, and sustainability of 61 historical Syriac churches and monasteries, most of which were constructed between the 4th and 9th centuries. By analysing these structures in detail and producing precise survey drawings, the research highlights the architectural evolution of rural Syriac religious buildings and their significance within the broader cultural landscape of Mardin.
